The Alfa Romeo Tonale has been confirmed for South Africa, with the local arm of the Italian car manufacturer announcing at the local launch of the updated Giulia and Stelvio line-up that the plug-in hybrid SUV will reach our shores by the first quarter of 2023.

The Tonale will reach SA by 2023.

Revealed in 2019 as a concept SUV, the Tonale “is an expression that looks fondly into [Alfa Romeo’s] future” and “[embodies] unique Italian design and the unmistakable Alfa Romeo style”. According to the automaker, the Tonale’s exterior styling recalls a number of time-honoured design elements, synonymous with the rich history of the brand, with an execution that excites a modern approach to the new Alfa Romeo anatomy.

Concept features steering wheel-mounted engine start/stop button.

Inside, the concept version featured the “highest standards” of technology to ensure a connected, comfortable and dynamic user experience, while keeping the pleasure of a sporty drive at the forefront. The concept’s cabin featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display.

Plug-in hybrid powertrain’s outputs are still to be confirmed.

Powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain (outputs are yet to be confirmed), the Tonale’s rear electric engine “opens the way to new technological solutions that offer enhanced driving dynamics, to maximise the pleasure of sporty driving”.

Said Alfa Romeo, “The Tonale looks into the future of the CUV segment, creating a holistic creative expression through the blend of beauty and technology. For Alfa Romeo Design, it is a piece of art.”
