BMW has whipped the wraps off the all-new X2, with the German marque revealing the second generation in sporty M35i xDrive and all-electric iX2 guise. Here’s what you can expect…

NEW BMW X2 EXTERIOR

Sporting “dynamically stretched” lines, the latest iteration’s coupé-styled bodywork has grown by 194 mm in length (to 4 554 mm), 21 mm (to 1 845 mm) in width, and 64 mm (to 1 590 mm) in height. At the same time, the wheelbase and fore and aft tracks have increased.

From a design point of view, the new X2 is distinguished by its model-specific, upright front end, which, the Bavarian brand says, exudes presence. Exterior highlights include the “striking” LED headlamps (adaptive LED units, replete with matrix high-beam, are available as an option), flanking an “almost” hexagonal kidney grille, which, for the first time on a premium compact BMW crossover/SUV, can be specified with contour lighting (BMW Iconic Glow). ‘Round back, the sporty M35i xDrive variant gains a ‘Gurney-style” spoiler and a quad-tailpipe arrangement. The taillamps are unique to the X2. In South Africa, the X2 sDrive18i will feature BMW’s M Sport package as standard fitment. The firm’s M Sport package Pro is available as an option. The X2 can be had with wheels measuring up to 21 inches in diameter.

The exterior colour palette comprises two solid and eleven metallic paint finishes, which includes new Fire Red metallic.

NEW BMW X2 INTERIOR

Inside, the X2 features BMW’s Curved Display, which comprises a digital instrument cluster and touch-enabled infotainment screen. The latter set-up incorporates BMW Maps and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto screen mirroring. Dual-zone climate control and a sports steering wheel, wrapped in leather, are standard fitment, as is an electrically operated tailgate. Luggage capacity for the ICE models is rated at 560 to 1 470 litres, and, for the electric variant, 525 to 1 400 litres.

NEW BMW X2 ENGINES

The powertrain line-up comprises three internal-combustion engines and, for the first time, an all-electric set-up. The former options include the sDrive18i (115 kW/230 Nm 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbopetrol); sDrive18d (110 kW/360 Nm 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel); sDrive20i (125 kW/280 Nm 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbopetrol), and 2.0-litre turbocharged four M35i xDrive, producing 233 kW/400 Nm of torque for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 5.4 seconds. The iX2 xDrive30’s electric configuration produces 230 kW and 494 Nm, which, BMW says, allows the emissions-free crossover to complete the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.6 seconds. BMW claims a range of up to 449 km when the battery is fully charged.
