Volkswagen has unwrapped the box-fresh Tiguan. Here’s what you can expect from the new generation…
Underpinned by VW’s MQB evo platform, the latest iteration of the Wolfsburg-based brand’s midsize SUV features a “powerful” front end, replete with “flat” LED headlamps (IQ.LIGHT HD matrix units are also available) and a glass-covered strip, the latter spanning the nose. The radiator openings have been placed on the outer sides of the front bumper, where refreshed air curtains provide “optimum” air routing. According to the German marque, these changes, in addition to the sleeker silhouette, have improved the Tiguan’s drag coefficient from 0.33 to 0.28. ‘Round back, a new LED light strip spans the tailgate. Wheels of up to 20 inches in size are available.
Inside, the new Tiguan takes on a “completely new” concept and design, VW says. The most notable addition to the Tiguan’s cabin is a 15-inch OLED touchscreen infotainment system, taking centre stage on the dashboard. VW Digital Cockpit instrument-cluster set-up is also present, as is a new head-up display. The seats are of VW’s new ergoActive variety. The pews offer pneumatic four-way lumbar adjustment and 10-chamber pressure massage functionality. Seat hearting and ventilation can also be had. The new Tiguan’s luggage capacity has increased by (a claimed) 37 litres to offer a boot space of 652 litres.
So, what about powertrains? Well, thanks to the new Tiguan’s underpinnings, the automaker says various drive types can be implemented in the new generation. The engine options include turbodiesel and turbo-petrol, mild-hybrid variations of the latter, and plug-in hybrid units.
