The BMW M4 Competition Convertible has made its international debut. The third body shape in the German manufacturer’s M4 line-up, the soft-top variant has been revealed boasting BMW’s rear-biased M xDrive setup.
Said BMW, the “M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive breaks new ground for M as an open-top high-performance sportscar with all-wheel drive”.
Boasting the same powertrain and transmission – a 3,0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six engine producing 375 kW and 650 N.m (from 2 750 r/min), and eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox – as the hard-top M4 Competition, the convertible variant, BMW says, accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3,7 seconds. Top speed is rated at 280 km/h when specifying the M Driver’s package. Compared to the all-wheel-drive M4 Competition Coupé, the all-wheel-drive M4 Competition in soft-top guise is only 0,2 seconds slower from zero to 100 km/h.
Speaking of time, the Munich manufacturer says the convertible’s canvas roof folds away in 18 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h. According to BMW, the “newly developed” canvas roof weighs 40 percent less than the hard-top retractable roof of its predecessor and, with the roof stowed away, offers 80 litres more luggage capacity than its forebear.
As standard, the convertible top is finished in black, with Anthracite silver available as an option. A wind deflector is included when specifying the Open Air package. With the roof down, BMW says the M4 Competition Convertible provides occupants with “unobstructed access to the sun and onrushing wind, and direct immersion in the engine’s soundtrack”.
Although the M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive, plus optional M Performance parts, has already appeared on BMW South Africa’s website, local pricing has yet to be announced.
