Boasting the most powerful four-pot from BMW’s latest generation of engines, the German marque has whipped the wraps off the X1 M35i xDrive. Here’s what you can expect…

So, how much power does the most powerful four-pot in BMW’s arsenal produce? Up to 233 kW! “Up to”, you say? Indeed. For the USA and other selected markets, the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol unit churns out this figure. The full complement of power is available from 5 750 to 6 500 r/min. However, it’s worth noting that, for the European market, the engine has been tuned to develop 221 kW. The torque output is rated at 400 Nm, which is sent to BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system via a seven-speed dual-clutch Steptronic transmission as soon as the rev needle edges the 2 000 r/min.

BMW X1 M35i xDRIVE PERFORMANCE

The Bavarian brand claims the X1 M35i xDrive completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.4 seconds. However, in the press material, the firm doesn’t specify whether this is for the 233 kW or 221 kW version. (The latter figure and the above-mentioned sprint time are, however, listed on the same sheet indicating the hot SUV/crossover’s technical specifications, as is the average fuel consumption figure of 8.0 L/100 km.)

Stopping performance is provided by an integrated braking system. BMW’s M Compound brakes are available as an option. The latter set-up comprises four-piston, fixed-calliper braks with 385 mm drilled discs at the front. The rear items feature single-piston, floating callipers with 330 mm discs.

Alongside dynamic stability control, the X1 M35i xDrive featurs near-actuator wheel slip limitation, which, BMW says, provides unshakable handling poise and supreme agility.

The apex X1 is distinguished from its stablemates with several M-specific design elements. These include a front apron with larger air intakes, more prominent side skirts, a rear diffuser and  exclusive roof-mounted spoiler. Four tailpipes, each measuring 80 mm in diameter, are also present. M side mirror caps are included. As standard, the X1 M35i xDrive rides on 19-inch M light-alloy wheels.

The M-specific theme continues to the interior, where the flagship X1 features an Alcantara-clad instrument panel, Aluminium Hexacube Dark trim elements and an anthracite-coloured headliner. The leather-wrapped M steering wheel features paddle shifters. M Sport seats are available as an option. M pedals and door sill trim add to the cabin’s sporty look.

Standard features include the BMW Curved Display — comprising a 10.7-inch control display and 10.25-inch information display — incorporating Apple CarPlay/Android Auto screen mirroring. The system is run by BMW’s Operating System 9. Two-zone climate control is also present.
