BMW has finally whipped the wraps off the XM, the first original M car since the legendary M1 sports car in BMW M’s 50-year history.

The performance SAV (sports activity vehicle in BMW speak) is equipped with a newly developed (360 kW/650 Nm) 4.4-litre V8 with “cutting-edge” M TwinPower Turbo tech assisted by a (145 kW/280 Nm) electric motor integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. In total, the XM’s M Hybrid drive system produces 480 kW and 800 Nm of torque, transferred to the road via the firm’s M xDrive all-wheel-drive set-up. The Bavarian brand says these figures allow the XM to accelerate to the three-figure marker from a standstill in 4.3 seconds.

However, for those looking for more power and torque, BMW has announced it will add the XM Label Red to the line-up in 2023. When introduced, the XM Label Red’s outputs will overshadow the standard model’s to become the most powerful road-legal series-production M car ever produced. This variant churns out a whopping 550 kW and 1 000 Nm! Performance figures are yet to be released.

BMW says the XM’s exterior design is a statement of exclusivity, presence and performance. This M-badged SUV’s kidney grille features gold-coloured surrounds and continuous contour lighting. Split headlamps flank the grille. A gold accent band running along the side is reminiscent of the black item found on the M1. The BMW logos engraved into the rear window also pays homage to the sports car. As standard, the XM rides on 21-inch alloy wheels. Wheels measuring 22 to 23 inches are also available.

The cabin, BMW says, is designed around an active driving experience. Standard items include M multifunction seats and a model-specific leather-wrapped steering wheel. The curved display features M-specific graphics, including shift lights. Ambient lighting, four-zone climate control, and a Harman Kardon surround sound system are also present.
