Billed as a technological tour de force, Ford has whipped the wraps off the Mustang GTD, a limited-edition, “ultra high-performance”, street-legal performance car, which, the Blue Oval brand says, “shatters every preconceived notion of a supercar”.

According to Ford, every precision part of the Mustang GTD has been purposefully designed. “Every form is driven by function,” the company says. “It is designed to do one thing: go faster around a track with more technology than the race cars it’s based on.”

The Mustang GTD takes inspiration from Ford’s Mustang GT3 racer, which is scheduled to compete at Le Mans in 2024. “This is a new approach for us. We didn’t engineer a road car for the track, we created a race car for the road. [The] Mustang GTD takes racing technology from our Mustang GT3 race car, wraps it in a carbon-fibre Mustang body and unleashes it for the street.”

Designed to be the quickest Mustang ever created by Ford, this special edition boasts a 5.2-litre supercharged V8 targeting an “estimated” 588 kW. The “symphonic” petrol motor, which revs to “more than” 7 500 r/min, sends power to the rear-axle via a carbon-fibre driveshaft coupled with a rear-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. According to the automaker, this allows for a near 50:50 weight distribution. Stopping power is provided by carbon ceramic brakes.

So, how much does the Mustang GTD cost? Well, Ford says pricing is expected to begin at approximately $300 000, which, at the current Rand-Dollar exchange rate, amounts to R5 610 975.
