Ford has whipped the wraps off a plug-in hybrid version of its best-selling double-cab bakkie, the Ranger, with the Blue Oval brand saying the PHEV model “is a best-of-both-worlds solution for work, play, and family — offering customers zero-tailpipe emissions EV driving for short trips, or hybrid performance that delivers incredible on- and off-road performance”.
“[The] Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will combine electric driving capability with the adventure-ready versatility and work-ready dependability customers have come to expect from Ranger,” said the company.
Powered by Ford’s 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the firm says the Ranger PHEV will deliver more torque than any other Ranger. The EcoBoost powertrain is coupled with an electronic motor, mated to a rechargeable battery set-up. The petrol-electric unit allows this variant to drive on electricity alone “for more than” 45 km.
The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will also feature Pro Power Onboard, a system enabling customers to power their tools and appliances on a worksite or remote campsite.
