Hyundai’s futuristic-looking MPV – the Staria – has landed on South African shores, with the local arm of the South Korean carmaker announcing pricing and specification for the new people-mover. See pricing below…

Staria measures 5 253 mm long and 1 997 mm wide.

Priced from R789 900, the four-strong Staria line-up comprises three levels of specification and one engine option. Powering the local line-up, is a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel motor. The four-cylinder oil-burner produces 130 kW and 430 N.m of torque, the latter available from a lowly 1 500 r/min to 2 500 r/min in the rev band. All models feature an eight-speed automatic transmission

According to Hyundai, the engine sips 8.7 L/100 km on average. Top speed is rated at 185 km/h, while the Staria completes the zero to 100 km/h sprint in 12.4 seconds.

The opening gambit to the local range, the Staria Executive is the sole variant available with the option of a nine- or 11-seat configuration. As standard, Executive trim includes, among others, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, replete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring; wireless smartphone charging; automatic climate control; and fore and aft park distance sensors, which are supplemented by a reverse-view camera. Allowing passengers to charge their smart devices, an array of USB ports are located throughout the cabin. 

Safety items include six airbags and ISOFIX anchorages, cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. Executive models ride on 17-inch alloy wheels.

Elite models upgrade to a 10.2-inch digital driver’s display, ventilated and heated front pews, and automatic sliding doors and a “smart” power tailgate. Additional safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and forward collision avoidance. Elite models gain LED head- and taillamps, and LED daytime-running lights. Eighteen-inch alloys are included. 

Spearheading the line-up, the Luxury derivative gains myriad cosmetic upgrades, with customers offered the choice of a dark chrome or copper chrome front grille. The 18-inch wheels can be had in similar finishes. Additional convenience items include heating and ventilation functionality for the independent (allowing for swivelling) second-row pews; surround-view monitor; and aft air vents. A 12-speaker Bose sound system and 10-hue ambient lighting are standard. Independent swivelling seats are also included in the top-spec derivative. The seats are upholstered in Nappa leather. 

Elite and Luxury models gain LED lamps all-round.

As standard, all models ship with Hyundai’s seven-year/200 000 km warranty. Executive and Elite derivatives feature a six-year/90 000 km service plan, while the range-topping, Luxury variant gains a seven-year/105 000 km service plan.
