The Land Rover Defender V8 has finally touched down on South African shores, with the local arm of the British marque revealing pricing for the “most potent” Defender ever made. See pricing below…
Boasting a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol motor, the flagship Defender sends 386 kW and 625 N.m of torque to all for corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to Land Rover, this allows the short-wheelbase, 90 variant to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. The 110, meanwhile, accelerates to the three-figure marker from standstill in a claimed 5.4 seconds. Both models sport a top speed of 240 km/h.
According to Land Rover, the Defender V8 delivers heightened performance without compromising on its namesake’s “legendary” capability. “Engineered to be the fastest and most engaging production Defender ever, it delivers unrivalled agility and driver appeal,” the Coventry carmaker says.
The V8-powered Defenders are equipped with “unique” transmission and suspension tuning. The latter includes bespoke spring and damper rates and a new electronic active rear differential, complete with Yaw Controller, “to deliver more agile and engaging handling with improved body control”.
This is aided by large-diameter, solid anti-roll bars, which assist in reducing body roll when cornering. The Yaw Controller, meanwhile, allows fine control of cornering as the Defender reaches and exceeds the limits of grip.
According to the Whitley firm, the new Dynamic program in the Defender V8’s Terrain Response 2 system affords a more “playful” and “responsive” character. Activating this setting sharpens up throttle response.
As standard, all models ship with a five-year/100 000 km maintenance plan. Included in the asking prices (below), is a warranty of similar timespan and distance.
