The Shelby Speedster has blasted onto South African shores, with the local arm of the US firm saying the first SA customer will take delivery of the limited-edition muscle car this month. It is one of only three Speedsters that’s making its way here. Ninety-eight were reserved for the American market, with 25 set aside for other markets.

“The Speedster is unlike anything we’ve built before,” said Peter Lindenberg, CEO of Shelby South Africa. “Being able to get our hands on one of these from such a limited number is a real honour and wouldn’t have been possible were it not for the excellent work that our team has been producing.”

“The Speedster is such a unique and special convertible”

The person for whom the first locally available Speedster is destined prefers to remain unnamed. However, the owner “can’t wait to take delivery of her limited-edition Shelby”.

“The men in my family are car crazy, and I wanted something of my own to have some fun with. The Shelby brand has been top-of-mind for me since the film Ford vs Ferrari was released, and the Shelby Speedster is such a unique and special convertible to enjoy on the beautiful Cape roads.”

“The supercharged engine produces 615 kW”

The Shelby Speedster “transforms” a Mustang convertible into a two-seater roadster, complete with a hard-top tonneau system. The latter item can be removed within “minutes”. Amplifying the car’s presence, it is fitted with a widebody aero kit.

The Shelby Speedster is powered by Ford’s familiar 5.0-litre V8, now equipped with a Whipple supercharger. Thanks to this set-up, the engine boasts a power output “in the region of” 615 kW.
