The McLaren 765LT Spider has made its debut as the most powerful and track-focused convertible supercar ever developed by the British brand. Said James Warner, chief engineer at McLaren Automotive, “We developed the 765LT Spider to be a car without compromise, every bit as exciting and rewarding to drive as the coupé, with all of the connection, closeness and engagement, but with the added benefit of so much more of that amazing LT sound, even closer to the driver.” Only 765 units will be built.

In the UK, the 765LT Spider costs £310 500 which, at the current exchange rate, amounts to R6,4 million.

The McLaren 765LT Spider is powered by the Woking manufacturer’s 4,0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine. The M850T motor is endowed with 563 kW and 800 N.m. Available from 7 500 r/min and 5 500 r/min, power and torque are directed to the rear axle through McLaren’s seven-speed sequential-shift gearbox.

The 765LT Spider, McLaren says, completes the quarter-mile sprint in 10 seconds.

Retractable hard-top stows away in only 11 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h.

According to McLaren, the 765LT Spider accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2,8 seconds, zero to 200 km/h in 7,2 seconds and zero to 300 km/h in 19,3 seconds. Maximum speed is rated at 330 km/h. McLaren says the 765LT Spider’s in-gear acceleration times are 15 percent quicker than that of the 720S Spider. The 765LT’s electrically operated hard-top, which is constructed from a single carbon-fibre frame, stows away in just 11 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Equipped with six-piston 360 mm front and four-piston 380 mm rear carbon ceramic brake discs, McLaren claims the 765LT Spider travels only 29,5 metres when decelerating from 100 km/h to zero.

Although absent (to save weight), a lightweight audio system can be specified at no cost.

For improved handling, McLaren has equipped its fastest convertible to date with, among others, a quicker steering rack ratio and stiffer torsion bar. The track-focused driving experience is further enhanced thanks to the 765LT Spiders lightweight, 1 388 kg body structure, lower ground clearance and wider front track. Adding to the theatrics is a titanium exhaust system. The 765LT is fitted with 19-inch front and 20-inch rear 10-spoker lightweight alloy wheels, wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo R tyres measuring 245/35 up front and 305/30 at the rear.
