Mercedes-AMG has finally whipped the wraps off the highly anticipated new-generation C63 S, with the latest iteration of the German marque’s premium performance sedan boasting an electrified 2.0-litre engine producing 500 kW.  According to the Three-pointed Star brand, “With know-how from Formula 1, [the C63 S E Performance] brings state-of-the-art technologies from motorsport to the road.”

“With the C63 S E Performance, we are opening a new chapter in the history of our brand,” said Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “The new C63, in particular, is a real game changer. With its revolutionary concept, it brings a completely new approach to the segment, which until now has been primarily characterised by the promise purely of performance.”

“The new C63 is a real game changer”

The most talked about addition to the AMG’s box-fresh C63 is arguably its electrified powertrain. The (350 kW/545 Nm) 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine sited up front is coupled with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor sited at the rear. The 150 kW/320 Nm electric motor is linked to a high-performance battery.

Together, the petrol-electric arrangement produces 500 kW and a whopping 1 020 Nm of torque, sent to Merc’s AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, complete with a drift mode, via a nine-speed AMG Speedshift transmission.

“It is a technological masterpiece that takes a new approach”

The Affalterbach-based brand claims the new (2 111 kg) C63 S E Performance sprints to the three-figure marker from a standstill in 3.4 seconds. The top speed is electronically governed to 250 km/h but can be lifted to 280 km/h as an option.

The claimed fuel consumption figure is 6.9 L/100 km. Mercedes says the C63 can travel up to 13 km on electric power alone.

“With its Performance hybrid drive and electrically assisted exhaust turbocharger, the new C63 S E Performance is a technological masterpiece that takes a new approach,” said Jochen Hermann, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

“The electrified powertrain offers a whole new driving experience. The immediate response of the electric drive at the rear axle, the rapid torque build-up, the fast power output, and the draw of our battery are very special features. Add to this the standard-fit rear axle steering and the fully variable all-wheel drive with Drift Mode – the new C63 again illustrates the high level of technical expertise that AMG possesses.”

As this is a full-fat AMG model, the C63 is differentiated from its standard C-Class stablemates by more muscular proportions. Compared to the non-AMG C-Class models, the C63’s AMG body shell is 50 mm longer and the front wings wider. As standard, the performance sedan rides on 19-inch alloy wheels.

The interior features AMG sports seats, wrapped in “special” upholstery. The pews also have a distinct stitching pattern. The MBUX infotainment system includes various AMG- and hybrid-specific displays and functions.
