The new-generation BMW 7 Series has finally made its official global premiere as a “symbol” of the German marque’s innovative strength. According to the Munich car manufacturer, its pinnacle saloon is wrapped up in a new definition of luxury that focuses on the individual’s attitudes, needs and emotions.

“The new BMW 7 Series has been designed to meet the needs of a modern target group that sees itself as committed to meeting challenges in a responsible manner – and one that views personal mobility as a way to experience unique moments in everyday life and on trips away,” said the automaker.

Designed from the ground up, the 7 Series is now offered in only long-wheelbase form and available (at debut) with a choice of internal-combustion engines, plug-in hybrid powertrains and — a first for the 7 — all-electric drive. These include BMW i and M derivatives.

The first M model comes in the shape of the M760e xDrive. Scheduled to make its debut in 2023, this variant is powered by a petrol-electric powertrain, producing 420 kW and 800 Nm of torque. Thanks to the electric motor, a boost of an extra 30 kW is on offer for short durations.

“The new 7 captures the imagination with an overall design coherence unmatched by any rival”

Scheduled to join the above-mentioned M derivative at a later stage in 2023, the i7 M70 xDrive’s twin electric-motor arrangement produces “well over” 441 kW and “more than” 1 000 Nm. BMW says this allows the future flagship model to blast to the three-figure marker from a standstill in “under” 4.0 seconds.

The automaker says a diesel model, which incorporates 48 V mild-hybrid tech, will be added to its European range next year. BMW says it has a market-specific drive system portfolio that includes exclusive offerings for China – its most important sales region – and a diesel model for Europe.

Inside, the seventh-generation 7 boasts BMW’s latest operating system. A fully digital curved display dominates the front facia. Passengers in the rear are offered a “unique” entertainment set-up in the form of a 31.3-inch panoramic theatre screen with 8K resolution.

“The seventh model generation takes to the stage as the most advanced and innovative vehicle in the luxury segment. At the same time, the new edition captures the imagination with an overall design coherence unmatched by any rival. The BMW 7 Series is therefore once again a symbol of the BMW Group’s innovative strength,” said the manufacturer.
