The all-new Hyundai i20 has arrived in South Africa. Starting from R275 000 (see full pricing for the local line-up below), the third-generation version of the Korean manufacturer’s small hatchback boasts a sportier exterior design, new tech on the inside and can now be had with a turbocharged petrol engine.

The local line-up of the new i20 consists of five models (eight if you include the Fluid models sporting two-tone exterior paint schemes), employing either Hyundai’s 1,4-litre MPI motor, 1,2-litre Kappa engine or 1,0-litre TGDI unit. The normally aspirated 1,4- and 1,2-litre units produce 74 kW and 133 N.m, and 61 kW and 115 N.m respectively. The newest engine option to the range, the 1,0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder produces 90 kW from 6 000 r/min and 172 N.m from 1 500 r/min.

Transmission options include a five-speed manual for the 1,2-litre and a six-speed automatic for the 1,4-litre. Models making use of forced induction can be had with the choice of either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DCT for the turbocharged model.

Hyundai i20
Cruise control includes as standard on Fluid variants.

Two trim levels are on offer for each variant: entry-level Motion and top-of-the-line Fluid specification. Items such as an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; a multifunction steering wheel; digital driver’s display; automatic headlamps and daytime-running lights; driver- and passenger-side airbags; Isofix anchorages; and a reverse camera with parking sensors are offered as standard across the line-up. Base trim includes, among others, cloth upholstery, manual air-conditioning and 15-inch steel wheels. Fluid trim upgrades to, among others, artificial leather upholstery, wireless smartphone charging, cruise control, side airbags and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The new i20, Hyundai says, has been inspired by the manufacturer’s design DNA of “sensuous sportiness”. The i20’s now sportier-looking bodywork measures 10 mm longer and 41 mm wider than the second-generation i20. Ground clearance, meanwhile, has increased from 150 mm to 170 mm. Exterior colour options include Typhoon Silver, Titan Grey,  Starry Night and Phantom Black. Polar White and Fiery Red are also on offer and, in Fluid models, can be had with a black contrast roof at additional cost.

All new i20 models feature Hyundai’s four-year/60 000 km service plan and seven-year/200 000 km manufacturer’s warranty as standard. See pricing below…
