The new Isuzu mu-X has finally touched down on South African shores, with the second-generation model of the Japanese car manufacturer’s seven-seater SUV boasting a bold new look and fresh tech. See pricing below…

Note the striking LED DRLs.

Engineered for “superior” performance in harsh environments, “the new mu-X is a massive step-up for Isuzu”, says Craig Uren, senior vice president Isuzu sales and marketing. “It represents a shift in how customers will view vehicles in this segment in terms of ride quality, luxury, and technology.” According to Uren, “The new mu-X will not only attract more buyers in this segment but is likely to attract buyers from other segments as well.”

“The new mu-X is a massive step-up for Isuzu”

“Aimed at growing families who want a 7-seater that still fits their lifestyle needs”, the new mu-X, Isuzu says, “offers comfort and convenience features for up to seven adults with a cabin that is the largest in the segment, while new safety and driver assistance features further make driving long distances a breeze.”

ONYX variant features a nine-inch touchscreen.

Inside, the new model features convenience items such as touchscreen infotainment, complete with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, and reverse-view camera. LS models feature a six-speaker sound system, while ONYX and LSE variants gain an eight-speaker unit. As standard, LS and LSE derivatives feature cruise control. ONYX trim upgrades to adaptive cruise control.

Safety items include seven airbags and ISOFIX anchorages, among others. The range-topping, ONYX model includes Isuzu’s Intelligent Driver Assistance System (IDAS). This setup comprises a suite of active and passive safety systems.

ONYX model rides on 20-inch alloys, LSE variants on 18-inch wheels, and LS derivatives on 17-inch items.

The new mu-X measures 4 850 mm bow to stern, 1 870 mm wide and 1 820 mm tall. The approach and departure angles are 30 and 26 degrees respectively. Hill decent control and hill start assist are standard fitment, as is trailer sway control.

The second iteration of the mu-X is powered by a new version of the firm’s 3.0-litre oil-burner, producing 140 kW and 450 Nm of torque (the latter available from a lowly 1 600 r/min). The turbocharged unit is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is rated at 7.6 L/100 km.

Range-topping model priced at R860 500.

As standard, all models are sold with Isuzu’s Complete Care package, comprising a five-year/120 000 km warranty. A five-year/90 000 km service plan is included in the asking price.
