Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) has announced local specifications for the soon-to-arrive new-generation Golf R, which is scheduled to arrive on local shores early in 2023. Pricing will be revealed closer to its launch date.

As standard, the new Golf R ships with VW’s ‘Light and Vision Package’, which includes high-beam control light assist; keyless entry; an electric tailgate; adaptive chassis control, including driving profile selection; and 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels. A panoramic sunroof is also included. Three exterior colour options are available. These are Pure White, Lapiz Blue Metallic and Deep Black Pearl.

The interior features Nappa leather seats, touchscreen infotainment replete with wireless app-connect and voice control, and VW’s ‘Discover Pro’ system with satellite navigation. Wireless smartphone charging is also present.

For starters, the list of optional equipment includes VW’s IQ.Light LED matric headlamps; parallel park and front and rear assist, including a rear-view camera system; blind-spot monitoring and ‘Travel Assist’ with lane assist and adaptive cruise control. Customers are also offered a head-up display and Harman Kardon sound system.

Black 19-inch Estoril wheels are also available at additional cost, as is an Akrapovič exhaust system. The optional Black Performance Package with a drift mode is also on offer. Customers are also offered the choice of lifting the top speed to 270 km/h.

As a reminder, the new Golf R’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 235 kW and 400 Nm of torque. VW says these figures allow the pinnacle Golf to sprint to the three-figure marker from a standstill in “just” 4.8 seconds. The standard top speed is rated at 250 km/h. VW claims an average fuel consumption figure of 7.8 L/100 km.

A seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox sends power and torque to a new version of the German marque’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. According to VW, “The new all-wheel-drive system and high-tech running gear merge to create a host of innovations whilst offering maximum agility and driving pleasure.”
