The new Toyota Hilux GR-Sport has touched down in South Africa, with the local arm of the Japanese automaker revealing pricing and spec for the latest model in its best-selling bakkie line-up.

Hilux GR-Sport

Priced at R865 400, the GR-S-badged Hilux double cab features an uprated version of Toyota’s familiar 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. Compared to its 2.8-litre, six-speed automatic Hilux Legend siblings, the turbocharged oil-burner found under the bonnet of the Hilux GR-Sport produces 15 kW and 50 Nm of torque more at 165 kW and 550 Nm, available from 3 000 r/min and 1 600 r/min, respectively.

The engine is coupled with a six-speed automatic gearbox. Although producing more power and torque, Toyota claims the GR-Sport model sips the same amount of diesel as its stablemates mentioned above. That’s an average fuel consumption figure of 8.0 L/100 km. However, the CO2 emissions are 1 g/km more at 210 g/km. The top speed has also remained the same at 175 km/h.

The Hilux GR-Sport is set apart from its stablemates with the addition of several model-specific trim elements. Starting with the exterior, the most notable revision is the more aggressive front end, where “Toyota” adorns the front grille, and the bumper has been updated. Red accents can be found on the fore and aft wheel arches, while GR-specific decals have been placed at the bottom of the doors. “GR” badging is also present. The Hilux GR-Sport also features a GR-S styling bar and side steps.

The red detailing has been carried over to the cabin. A red strip spans the dashboard, while the seats feature red contrast stitching. Carbon-fibre-look trim can also be found on the dashboard. “GR” badging can be found on the multifunction steering wheel and engine start/stop button. It’s also been embroidered on the front pews’ headrests.
