The Jeep Gladiator has finally touched down on South African shores, with the local arm of the U.S.-based automaker revealing pricing and specifications for the double-cab bakkie. See pricing below…
Billed as the most capable Jeep pick-up ever, the Gladiator is equipped with “advanced” powertrains. The Gladiator is powered by the company’s “proven” 3.6-litre V6 unit. The ‘Pentastar’ motor produces 206 kW and 347 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Delivering “legendary” off-road capability, the double cab is fitted with the firm’s ‘Rock-Trac’ 4×4 system. It also features the manufacturer’s third-generation, “heavy-duty” ‘Dana 44’ front and rear axles with a 4LO ratio of 4:1. ‘Tru-Lok” locking differentials are also standard fitment.
The rear five-link coil suspension set-up is exclusive to this model and features a duo of upper and lower forged steel control arms for longitudinal control. A track bar has been fitted for lateral axle control.
“There has been tremendous demand for this unique vehicle”
The Gladiator has an approach angle of 43.6 degrees, a breakover angle of 20.3 degrees and a departure angle of 26 degrees. The ground clearance is rated at 249 mm. The Gladiator further benefits from “up to” 800 mm water-fording capability.
The “traditional” steel bed incorporates steel cross-members to reinforce the load floor. The aluminium tailgate is damped. Four skid plates and bars protect the fuel tank, transfer case and the automatic transmission’s oil pan.
The interior features the automaker’s ‘Uconnect 8.4NAV’ infotainment system, replete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. A full-colour LED instrument cluster is included.
The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon is priced at R1 259 900. Pricing includes a three-year/100 000 km maintenance plan and a five-year warranty with a similar distance.
“There has been tremendous demand for this unique vehicle from our loyal Jeep customers and double-cab buyers all over the world. South Africans’ affinity to pickups or bakkies is well established, and we believe Gladiator offers them a true lifestyle alternative in this popular segment,” said Leslie Ramsoomar, managing director of Stellantis South Africa.
