Billed as the most refined WRX to date, the new-generation Subaru WRX has landed in South Africa. See pricing below…

Locally, two derivatives of the latest iteration are on offer, the entry-level 2.4DIT and range-topping  2.4DIT tS ES. Both models employ the Japanese automaker’s new 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine, producing 202 kW and 350 Nm. Power and torque are available from 5 600 r/min and 2 000 to 5 200 r/min, respectively.

“The new WRX represents the highest levels of refinement”

However, two transmission options are on offer. The base-spec variant is equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. The top-tier version sports the firm’s “newly-developed” CVT. The company says the latter eight-speed Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT) unit shifts “up to” 50 per cent quicker than before.

Based on the carmaker’s Global Platform, the WRX measures 1 465 mm in height (down by 10 mm), 4 670 mm in length (up by 75 mm), and 1 825 mm in width (up by 30 mm). Thanks to its underpinnings, Subaru says the new WRX represents the highest levels of refinement in its history.

Outside, the front end is characterised by a hexagonal grille and Subaru’s signature bonnet scoop. Multi-functional LED lamps flank the former item. A diffuser is integrated into the rear bumper. Subaru says this item stabilises airflow. Meanwhile, the rear, boot-mounted spoiler also assists in guiding airflow and enhancing stability. The WRX is equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 40-profile rubber.

A portrait-orientated infotainment system dominates the interior. The touch-enabled 11.6-inch item incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring, Bluetooth connectivity, and sat-nav. A 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is standard across the range.

Regarding safety, the WRX (in top-spec guise) features the firm’s “most advanced” EyeSight driver assistance system. The 4.0 version features pre-collision braking, autonomous emergency steering, lane departure assist, adaptive cruise and steering control, traffic sign recognition and a speed limiter.

All models ship with Subaru’s three-year/75 000 km maintenance plan. A five-year/150 000 warranty is included.
