With the local launch of the Tiguan R, Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) has released pricing for the performance-orientated Tiguan. The R-badged Tiguan is priced at R999 900.
STANDARD SPECIFICATION
As standard, the Tiguan R ships with R design bumpers and aerodynamic elements finished in high-gloss black. It can also be had in the same hue as the bodywork. The rear diffuser is finished in “unique” high-gloss black. The side mirrors are finished in matte chrome. The wheel arches house 20-inch Misano alloy wheels. Ten exterior colours are available.
The Tiguan R also features VW’s Lights and Vision package, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and rain sensor. A panoramic sunroof is included, as is fore and aft park distance control. The seats are upholstered in “premium” Nappa leather featuring the “R” logo. The touchscreen infotainment system features VW’s ‘Discover Pro’ software with sat-nav. Wireless app-connect is also included.
OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
Included in the list of optional equipment is VW’s IQ.Light LED matrix headlamps. Area-view and rear-view camera systems can also be had at additional cost. Further features in the list are a head-up display, a Harman Kardon sound system and IQ.Drive adaptive cruise control. Buyers can also option an Akrapovič exhaust set-up and 21-inch Estoril alloys.
ENGINE
Like its R-badged hot-hatch stablemate, the Golf R (see local spec and options here), the Tiguan R is equipped with VW’s 235 kW/400 Nm 2.0-litre four-pot, coupled with a seven-speed DSG transmission. The turbocharged petrol unit allows for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 250 kW. In addition, like the Golf R, the pinnacle Tiguan’s new 4Motion all-wheel-drive system features R-Performance torque vectoring. The Tiguan R’s ground clearance is 10 mm lower than the standard model’s.
According to VW, “With the new all-wheel drive system, handling agility, particularly when cornering, has been improved. With this system, the Tiguan R sets a new benchmark for SUV driving dynamics.”
