The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class has finally landed on South African shores, with the local arm of the German brand revealing pricing and specification for the W206-generation C200 and C220d.
Priced from R856 080, the new C200 is powered by a 1,5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which incorporates a 48 V mild-hybrid arrangement. The 1,5-litre unit produces 150 kW and 300 N.m of torque, sent to the driven wheels through Benz’s nine-speed automatic transmission. Thanks to the EQ Boost system, an additional 15 kW and 200 N.m are available for short bursts.
The C220d is priced from R911 740. The 220d is equipped with a 2,0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine which, like its C200 stablemate, incorporates a 48 V electrical system (all four-cylinder W206 C-Classes feature this electrified engine setup), allowing for an additional boost of 15 kW and 200 N.m. Linked to Benz’s 9G-Tronic transmission, the 220d’s diesel motor produces 147 kW and 440 N.m.
The C200 and C220d sports the Three-pointed Star brand’s Avantgarde exterior package as standard. Avantgarde trim includes, among others, a horizontal chrome strip on the radiator grille and five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels. Customers do, however, have the option of selecting AMG Line specification. The latter, R54 000 package includes, as its name would suggest, AMG exterior styling (an AMG front apron, complete with “sporty” air intakes, and a faux diffuser, which is finished in black), 18-inch light-alloy wheels and chrome trim for the tailpipe housings.
Four interior packages are on offer: Advanced, Advanced-Plus, Premium and Premium Plus. The no-cost Advanced package includes, among others, Avantgarde interior trim, Benz’s Thermotronic climate control system, and parking package, which includes a reverse-view camera and park distance sensors. Upgrading to Advanced-Plus will set you back R21 000. Equipped with Advanced-Plus, the C-Class gains, on top of the abovementioned items, a free-standing digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone charging, 64-colour ambient lighting and illuminated door sill panels.
Incorporating the former two packages, the (R62 000) Premium package adds Mercedes’ MBUX navigation system, memory functionality for the seats and a 360-degree surround view camera. The (R118 000) Premium-Plus package features all the fitment found in the previous packages, but gains Mercedes’ digital light headlamp units, four-zone Thermotronic automatic climate control and augmented reality for the MBUX satellite navigation system.
