In January 2023, the aggregate domestic new-vehicle sales were 43 509 units, an increase of 4.8 per cent (2 006 units) compared to January 2022. However, export sales declined by 1.8 per cent (367 units) — 20 536 compared to the 20 903 vehicles exported in the first month of 2022.
Of the total new-vehicle sales, an estimated 36 353 units (83.6 per cent) represented dealer sales, 12.1 per cent represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 2.2 per cent to the government and 2.1 per cent to industry corporate fleets.
The passenger-car marker recorded a sales figure of 31 072 units, an increase of 2.9 per cent (873 units), compared to the 30 199 new cars sold in January 2022. Of this overall figure, the car rental industry accounted for 16.2 per cent.
Domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini-buses were 10 622 units. This amounted to an increase of 998 units.
