naamsa, the Automotive Business Council of South Africa, has released new-vehicle sales statistics for June 2023. Here’s the breakdown and list of SA’s top 10 best-selling car brands in the sixth month of the year…

THE BREAKDOWN

According to naamsa, aggregate domestic new-vehicle sales in June, at 46 810 units reflected an increase of 5 758 units 14 per cent) from the 41 052 vehicles sold in June 2022. However, export sales recorded a decline of 12.6 per cent (3 920 units) to 27 296 units compared to the 31 216 vehicles exported in June 2022.

Overall, out of the total reported industry sales, an estimated 39 086 units (83.5 per cent) represented dealer sales; 10 per cent sales to the vehicle rental industry; 3.5 per cent sales to government; and 3 per cent to industry corporate fleets.

The June 2023 new-passenger-car market, at 29 795 units. registered an increase of 251 cars (0.8 per cent) compared to the new cars sold in June 2022. The car rental industry accounted for 13.4 per cent of sales. Domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini-buses registered 13 945 units, an increase of 5 070 units (57.1 per cent), from the LCVs sold during June 2022.

SA’s 10 BEST-SELLING CAR BRANDS IN JUNE 2023

So, which manufacturer sold the most new vehicles in total in June 2023? For starters, the top six remained the same, with Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) leading the pack, followed by Volkswagen SA, Suzuki Auto SA, Hyundai, Ford and Nissan. However, there were some changes in the bottom half (compared to May 2023)… Isuzu and Renault each moved up one position (from eighth to seventh and from ninth to eighth, respectively), relegating Haval to ninth spot. Kia remained in the tenth position.
