Car & Classic has announced that Sir Elton John’s Bentley Continental R is up for auction. The folks over at the online classic and specialist vehicle auction site say that this 1992 example encapsulates the two essential elements in the iconic British musician’s life — his love of interesting cars and, no surprise, music. Indeed, the model under the hammer features a bespoke 14-speaker MB Quart audio system!

Bought new in August 1992 by The Rocket Man via his management company William A Bong Limited, Elton John kept it for four years before the previous owner, who has now separated from the car to auction, kept it until now.

The Continental R is sold with paperwork in Sir Elton John’s management company name, a letter from the previous owner stating it was bought from there and a factory service book brimming with stamps. In addition, the car will return to its original number plate (K93 UPE). (The private plate — 55 VV — is not included in the sale.)

The classic luxury saloon was serviced by Weybridge Automobiles until 1999, after which the book stamps and service receipts moved to Axtell Rolls Royce and Bentley specialists in Guildford through 2017. The most recent stamp was from Royce Engineering in March 2021.

Car & Classic says many receipts for the service work and additional repairs are present. These include repairs to the window seals in 2006 and the ignition switch in 2014. In 2002, the gearbox was replaced.

Apart from the custom sound system mentioned above, the interior features leather upholstery. The seats have been re-coloured as the original. Walnut trim is also present.

The Continental R is equipped with a 6.75-litre V8 engine. The auction company says the engine fires up straight away, and the gears select smoothly.

“The Continental R was, along with the Mulsanne Turbo, the beginning of Bentley’s rejuvenation offering a new level of performance with exclusive super luxury,” said Car & Classic. The auction ends on 13 September 2022.
