The opening gambit to Subaru Corporation’s electric-vehicle portfolio, the emissions-free SUV will be the first underpinned by the automaker’s e-Subaru Global Platform. Jointly developed with Toyota, the dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) architecture, Subaru says, enables the company to “roll out various EVs efficiently by combining multiple modules and components, such as the front, centre and rear of a vehicle”.

According to Tokyo-based firm, Subaru and Toyota has combined their respective strengths – Subaru’s all-wheel-drive technology and Toyota’s vehicle electrification technology – to create a new SUV with attributes that only an all-electric vehicle can offer.

The Solterra’s dedicated electric-vehicle platform was co-developed with Toyota.

The “Solterra” (“Sol” meaning “sun” and “terra” “earth” in Latin) namesake, Subaru says, has been given to the electric SUV in appreciation of mother nature and to further advance the form of coexistence with it, and to represent the automaker’s commitment to deliver traditional Subaru SUV go-anywhere capabilities in an EV. The Solterra is scheduled to join Subaru’s SUV line-up by mid-2022.
