5. Isuzu D-Max — 1 273

In January 2023, Isuzu South Africa placed tenth on the list of SA’s top 10 best-selling car brands, with the local arm of the Japanese firm recording a total new-car sales figure of 1 380 in the first month of 2023. However, although the company ended last on the list mentioned above, the new D-Max (read our launch review here) made the list of SA’s top five best-selling vehicles in January 2023. Of the total Isuzus sold, 1 273 — 92.2 per cent — were of the firm’s bakkie.

4. Suzuki Swift — 1 499

In January 2023, Suzuki Auto South Africa retained its spot as SA’s third best-selling car brand, with the local arm of the Japanese automaker selling a total of 4 357 new vehicles. Leading the way for the firm was the ever-popular Swift — 1 499 people put pen to paper for the company’s compact hatchback. Regarding percentage, 34.4 per cent of Suzuki SA’s overall sales were Swifts.

3. Toyota Starlet — 2 037

In January 2023, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) again topped the list of SA’s best-selling car brands. Of the total number of new Toyotas sold (12 269), the Starlet came in third, recording a sales figure of 2 037 units. It’s also the third best-selling vehicle in SA. 2. Toyota Corolla Cross — 2 042

Since its introduction to SA, the Corolla Cross proved to be a hit. In January 2023, the tall-riding Corolla was the manufacturer’s second-best-selling vehicle and the second-best-selling vehicle in SA, with a total sales figure of 2 042 units. 1. Toyota Hilux — 2 769

No surprise here. The Hilux has again topped the local sales charts as SA’s best-selling vehicle. Regarding light-commercial vehicles (LCVs), in January 2023, TSAM sold 4 674 LCVs, 2 769 of which were new Hilux bakkies.
