Defender will become the official car partner of the Dakar Rally starting in 2025. In 2026, the brand will take it a step further by entering a works team to compete in the world’s toughest rally raid.
The partnership, which runs through 2028, kicks off with the 2025 Dakar Rally (January 3–17). Defender will provide a fleet of vehicles to transport rally officials and VIPs, as well as six specialized recce vehicles to support the Dakar organization in route testing for future events.
As the official car partner, Defender will showcase its legendary durability and off-road capability on some of the world’s harshest terrains. From 2026, Defender will compete with a factory team, further proving its performance. Full details of the competition programme will be revealed at the 2025 Dakar Rally.
Mark Cameron, Managing Director of Defender, said: “Adventure is in our DNA, so the Dakar Rally – the ultimate test of endurance – is the perfect fit. From 2025, we’ll demonstrate Defender’s strength as the official partner, and from 2026, we’ll take on the challenge with a works team, led by James Barclay.”
James Barclay, Managing Director of JLR Motorsport, added: “Dakar is the pinnacle of motorsport, where success depends on both human determination and vehicle performance. Bringing Defender to this legendary event is an exciting next step for us. We’re just beginning this journey and look forward to sharing more in 2025.”
David Castera, Dakar Director, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Defender as our official car partner. Their reliability and innovation will be essential to supporting the event, and we’re excited to see them compete starting in 2026.”
During the 2025 Dakar, Defender’s fleet will follow competitors across a challenging route, including a three-day stretch through the Empty Quarter, highlighting the brand’s rugged performance and reliability.
