The Toyota Hilux has once again topped TSAM’s monthly sales chart.

The Toyota Hilux has once again topped Toyota South Africa Motors’ (TSAM) monthly sales chart, with the Japanese manufacturer’s bestselling bakkie posting the highest monthly sales figure of any Toyota model sold this year in the month of May. Last month, TSAM sold a total of 3 700 units of the Hilux.

Said Leon Theron, senior vice president of sales and marketing at TSAM, “the Hilux’s mass appeal cannot be denied, and this is supported by the fact that it’s a top seller in the single-, extra- and double-cab body types”. “[The] Hilux caters to customers who are interested in both leisure and small-business vehicles, as well as anything in-between,” Theron added.

Toyota-Hiace
In 2019, Toyota announced its investing R454 million in its bespoke Hiace Ses’fikile plant.

Together with the Hiace, of which TSAM sold 1 331 units, TSAM says the Hilux spearheaded local sales of lits ight commercial vehicles (LCV). In total, TSAM registered a market share of 44,7 percent in the LCV market.

“The longest active model range in the country”, over one million Hiluxes have been sold since its arrival on South African shores more than five decades ago. “The incredible loyalty shown by our customers over more than half a century has enabled us to achieve an outstanding share of the local market. We are thankful to our fleet owners and rental companies for their continued support in these trying economic times. We are also grateful to our dealer network, as well as all Toyota staff, for their sterling efforts in making Toyota such a competitive brand,” Theron concluded.

Toyota-Fortuner
TSAM sold a total of 872 units of the updated Fortuner in May 2021.

In addition to its LCV sales, TSAM sold a total of 4 316 passenger units, which translates to a market share of 17,9 percent. In the passenger market, TSAM’s top sellers were the Fortuner (872 units sold), Urban Cruiser (717), Starlet (651), Corolla Quest (614) and Agya (517).
