Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the fresh-faced A-Class, with the German marque handing the hatchback and sedan siblings several “significant” updates, including introducing a new electrified powertrain to the line-up.

EXTERIOR UPDATES

Starting with the exterior design updates, the revised A-Class has “sporty” and “muscular” styling. The bonnet, complete with a duo of power bulges, slopes forward to a redesigned radiator grille, which now features a star pattern. The grille is flanked by subtly revised headlamps (lamps sporting LED units are available, too). The taillamp clusters feature LED tech as standard.

Four additional wheel designs are available in sizes up to 19 inches. High-gloss black light-alloy wheels in a multi-spoke design with rim flanges of similar colour are available as an option on the AMG Line model.

INTERIOR UPDATES & TRIM

Mercedes says, “Exclusiveness is also reflected in the interior of the [updated] A.” As standard, the cabin is equipped with 7.0- and 10.25-inch displays. Two 10.25-inch screens can be had as an option. The steering wheel has also been revised. Ambient lighting is present inside.

Three trim levels are available. The base model features “high-quality” comfort pews with new, three-dimensionally embossed ARTICO upholstery. Progressive trim offers a trio of interior hues. These include black, a “luxurious-looking” beige and new ‘zeitgeisty’ sage grey. A dark carbon fibre-look trim element is also present on the instrument panel and doors. AMG Line features bright aluminium trim and red contrast stitching.

POWERTRAINS

Benz electrified each (four-cylinder) petrol powertrain with 48 V mild-hybrid tech. These engines offer an additional 10 kW of power for short durations.

The petrol line-up includes the 100 kW/230 Nm A180, 120 kW/270 Nm A200, 140 kW/300 Nm A220 and 165 kW/350 Nm A250. A plug-in-hybrid option has also been added to the range. The A250e’s 1.4-litre PHEV powertrain produces 160 kW and 450 Nm of torque. The Three-pointed Star brand claims this model sips an average fuel consumption of only 1.1 L/100 km in the hatch and 1.0 L/100 km in the sedan. The diesel engines include the 85 kW/280 Nm A180d, 110 kW/320 Nm A200d and 140 kW/400 Nm A220d.
