Volkswagen has finally whipped the wraps off the facelifted third-generation Touareg, with the Wolfsburg-based automaker saying the it has enhanced its premium SUV with a sharpened design, high-tech features and improved suspension.
Starting with the “sharpened” exterior design, the updated Touareg’s front end features a revised grille, which incorporates the new headlamps, the latter of which can be specified with the German marque’s new IQ.Light HD matrix headlamps. The firm says the rear styling is also sharper. Here, an LED lighting strip, incorporating a VW emblem illuminating red (a first for the German market), spans the tailgate.
“We have sharpened up the design, integrated an illuminated rear logo, and made operation even more intuitive”
The updated Touareg was revealed with a choice of five powertrains, all of which equipped with an eight-speed automatric transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive. The engine line-up comprises two turbocharged diesel engines, one turbocharged petrol and a duo sporting plug-in hybrids powertrains.
Spearheading the updated Touareg range is the Touareg R eHybrid. This variant’s V6 petrol engine is coupled with an electric motor for a combined power output of 340 kW. Of course, as this is the performance-orientated version, it also sports several model-specific exterior and interior elements. The former includes items such as 20-inch Braga alloy wheels and blue brake callipers, replete with silver “R” logo. The blue hue is carried over to the interior, where several constrast accents in this colour can be found around the cabin. The latter also features Vienna leather seats, a panoramic sunroof and four-zone automatic climate control.
For the facelifted Touareg, VW has also “enhanced” the suspension arrangement. A new roof load sensor has also been fitted, and this item, VW says, is closely integrated with the suspension electronics.
The interior features VW’s Innovision Cockpit. This set-up comprises the firm’s Digital Cockpit and “high-end” Discover Pro Max infotainment system.
“The [updated] Touareg impresses with top quality and outstanding comfort. We have once again systematically implemented the wishes of our customers in this model: We have sharpened up the design, integrated an illuminated rear logo, and made operation even more intuitive. We’ve also enhanced the driving characteristics, making our premium Volkswagen even better. The result is a true all-rounder that will excite on-road, off-road and naturally also as a first-class towing vehicle,” said Imelda Labbé, Member of the Volkswagen Board of Management for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales.
