Okay, so we’ll be the first to admit that today’s Watch Wednesday pick – although a TAG Heuer Carrera, which is synonymous with motorsport – isn’t exactly completely automotive-related. However, when it looks as cool as the Skipper, does it really matter? In addition, according to the Swiss luxury watchmaker, there is a link between sailing and motorsport — their relentless passion for speed and precision.
A daring tribute to TAG Heuer’s sailing heritage, the firm says the new Carrera Skipper owes its unique look to the original model from the 1960s. However, for the latest iteration, the La Chaux-de-Fonds-based brand has reinterpreted the dual-counter dial of the Heuer Skipper, handing the new piece a “striking” blend of hues.
Used for the circular-brushed dial, blue takes centre stage. However, the dominent colour is offset by the use of orange, green and teal for the 3 o’clock sub-dial. The 9 o’clock sub-dial, replete with the wording “Skipper”, is finished in the latter colour. Orange and white detailing can be found at the 6 o’clock counter. Orange has also been applied to the seconds hand and the tips of the hour and minutes marker to add a touch more vibrance to the watch.
The 39 mm fine-brushed and polished steel case is presented on a blue fabric strap, incorporating a folding clasp, crafted from the same material. Inside, TAG Heuer’s TH20-06 calibre keeps time. The self-winding chronograph movement offers a generous power reserve of 80 hours.
TAG Heuer says the Carrera Skipper will be “available soon”, with the Ref. CBS2213.FN6002’s price coming in at R139 920. To stay in the loop, visit the company’s website here.
